1. Learning theater in Busan

In middle school, I was captivated by a play I saw for the first time at a small theater in Myeongnyun-dong, and chasing the dream of becoming an actor led my acting life to wander like a nomad. After finishing university in Busan, I founded a theater company with my alumni, but the thirst for learning remained. So I traveled to various regions, met theater groups with different colors, and through the process of learning and working, I could experience not only formal theater but also experimental theater, madang theater, yeonhui, and musicals.

2. Returning to the region

After COVID, I moved back to my hometown and began to long to settle down, but as an actor who must always be chosen, audition opportunities were scarce. Then I worked two years with the Gyeongnam Provincial Theater Company, where I learned the public nature, responsibility, and mission expected of a public organization. I also felt the happiness of communicating with good colleagues and producing wonderful works, and a sense of pride in serving the citizens through a theater funded by taxpayers.

3. My principles as an actor

There are a few resolutions I’ve made as an actor. First, ‘be someone who is needed in any setting.’ Watching seniors who dedicated themselves to a region and built an organization with all their heart during the theater company years made me decide I must be someone who is needed in any position. Second, ‘don’t bore the audience who came to see the performance.’ I believe art’s role is to be entertaining while allowing a moment to pause and think. But this doesn’t happen by itself, so through rigorous practice I want to 고민 and refine myself and give my best at every moment. Third, ‘live as a learner.’ I think a actor should always keep an open mind and be willing to learn. When meeting any collaborator, it is important to put oneself in another’s position and approach with a learning attitude before asserting one’s own views.

With the heart of a farmer who works honestly with sweat and reaps joyfully, I want to cultivate each work meaningfully.
